Typhoon Kong-rey has barreled through Taiwan, leaving one person dead and more than 200 others injured. Local weather officials are urging people to stay vigilant for intense rain and winds through Friday morning.
The officials say Kong-rey made landfall in the eastern county of Taitung at around 1:40 p.m. on Thursday before sweeping northwest. They say the center of the storm began moving over the Taiwan Strait at around 6:40 p.m.
Firefighting and other authorities say a 56-year-old woman died when a falling tree crushed her small truck in the central county of Nantou. They add that 205 people have been injured across Taiwan.
Kong-rey forced the closure of offices and schools across Taiwan on Thursday. It also severely disrupted transportation systems.
Airlines canceled all flights linking Taiwan’s main and remote islands as well as more than 30 percent of flights to and from locations outside Taiwan.
