MIC Spa, a historical Italian company specializing in the production of sewing threads, has recently organized the event “Future of Denim Production—Italy-Egypt synergy” held at the Conrad Cairo Hotel in Cairo, Egypt.
The event was attended by the Italian Chamber of Commerce in Egypt and CDP, in collaboration with three other specialised Italian companies from the denim production chain and textile industry—Nexia, a manufacturer of laundry machinery and laser technology; Officina39, a specialist in chemical solutions; and SIP Italy, an automation specialist for sewing.
Over 80 different companies attended the event and met with these Italian players to discuss future and innovative perspectives on denim production in Egypt within a series of seminars and discussions along with networking activities.
“The Egyptian textile industry is currently experiencing rapid growth, and MIC Group, with Cometex Threads Sae, our branch in Alexandria, Egypt, is ready to serve this promising market full of opportunities,” explained Tommaso Cumerlato, Director, MIC.

“We organised this event because we felt it was time to strengthen a reciprocal collaboration with local palyers and establish a better visibility with them. This occasion was not only a technical happening but also the opportunity for talking about new agreements and collaborations at the light of Italy’s Piano Mattei for Africa,” added the entrpreneur explaining how Italy’s strategic governmental, diplomatic, development cooperation, and investment project could help strengthen and renew ties with the continent.
“We recognise how important it is to produce jeans in this country, as it is already a hub where many worldwide jeans brands have started manufacturing here, and especially from The US., Northern America and Turkey,” he said.
“There are many right premises for producing here, also for Italian and European companies focused on nearshoring. In Egypt, they produce amazing quality cotton, they can adapt to the need to produce according to always faster rhythms, and short deadlines, and—no one can deny it—handlabor is extremely competitive,” explained the manager, although he feels it’s time to set up a tight connected cluster where various brands and companies can produce.
He also underlined that, unlike other productive areas like Pakistan and Bangladesh, Egypt is already hosting very good-quality garment and denim manufacturers, but they don’t collaborate enough among each other nor share information or strategies. “Competition does good, as everyone can profit from it,” he added.
“This experience was extremely enriching for us organisers of the event, but also for the entrepreneurs who visited us. We shared ideas and long-term common visions we could all focus on in order to create a true new denim productive hub strategically near Italy and Europe,” added Cumerlato.
