The McEllistrim family has a long legacy in politics. Tom was first elected to the Dáil in 2002 and lost his seat in 2011. He was elected to Kerry County Council in 2014 but lost his seat in 2019. However, the local elections this year saw him nearly regain this seat losing by only 6 votes to Fianna Fáil’s Anne O’Sullivan. He ran as an Independent.

Now, however, the Ballymac man has aligned with Independent Ireland for the forthcoming General Election.

With an extensive record of public service and dedication to the people of Kerry, Thomas brings deep local, regional, and national experience, along with a family legacy of political service spanning over a century.

A two-term County Councillor, former Mayor of Tralee Municipal District, Leas Chathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, and TD in Dáil Éireann, Thomas (Tom) has represented Kerry with integrity and commitment at every level.

His legislative experience includes serving as Vice Chairman of the Oireachtas Committee on Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, and as Convenor of the Oireachtas Committee on Education and Science.

“I’ve entered this race to advocate for the people of Kerry on issues that directly impact their lives, such as housing, healthcare, the cost of living, and agriculture,” Thomas McEllistrim shared.

“For me, politics is about working to improve people’s lives. This is why I’m running with Independent Ireland. The party offers a real choice for meaningful change.”

He cites housing, health care, immigration and cost of living as his top priorities

Michael Collins, Leader of Independent Ireland, Michael Collins, said: “Thomas McEllistrim has demonstrated exceptional dedication and results for the people of Kerry. He embodies the values of Independent Ireland with his deep-rooted commitment to his community. Thomas is the voice Kerry deserves in Dáil Éireann.”
