Inter Milan wingback Federico Dimarco has increasingly been winning comparisons to Real Madrid legend Roberto Carlos with his performances.

This is highlighted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, via FCInterNews. They note the “DiCarlos” nickname that has emerged for the 26-year-old on social media.

It is not exactly as though Dimarco has come out of nowhere.

The Italian international’s talent has been evident for a very long time.

Particularly in terms of his crossing and passing ability with his left food, Dimarco has always stood out – even when he went out on a series of loan moves.

The 2022-23 campaign was something of a watershed for Dimarco.

That was the season that really established the Inter youth academy graduate as a regular in the Nerazzurri’s starting eleven. He also began starting regularly for Italy around then.

And in the 2022-23 season, Dimarco was a crucial part of Inter’s run to the final of the Champions League.

The 2022-23 season did not mark the end of Dimarco’s growth at Inter, however.

Last season, the Italian proved to be an even more important player for the Nerazzurri.

And this time around, Dimarco is taking even more strides forward.

The 26-year-old showed that with his decisive stoppage time assist for Marcus Thuram in Inter’s Champions League win over Young Boys this week.

Dimarco’s crossing was always one of his strong suits – but it’s reached another level. He has reached the level where he is perhaps the most proficient crosser of the ball with his left foot in Europe.

Then, Dimarco has also become a player who pops up with goals. His goal in the derby against AC Milan was the latest example of that.

And Dimarco’s influence on Inter’s overall play is massive.

Therefore, the Gazzetta suggest, it is not too surprising that many see echoes of legendary former Real Madrid wingback Roberto Carlos in how Dimarco plays down Inter’s left flank.
