National security advisers of Japan, US, S.Korea to meet to reinforce ties NHK has learned that the national security advisers of Japan, the United States and South Korea are meeting to reaffirm further cooperation regardless of who wins the US presidential election.

Akiba Takeo, secretary general of Japan’s National Security Secretariat, is set to meet with his US counterpart Jake Sullivan and South Korea’s Shin Won-sik in Washington on Friday. The talks come ahead of the presidential election in November.

They are believed to be discussing ways to maintain reliable triparty relations and build up a system to jointly cope with international issues, hoping that the election result will not affect their cooperation.

They are expected to confirm their close collaboration in the face of urgent international issues, including increasing military activities by China and Russia, as well as North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. They are also believed to be discussing reports that North Korean troops have arrived in Russia, likely to fight against Ukraine to help Moscow’s ongoing invasion.

The security officials also plan to have separate two-way talks with each other.
