The Anti-Trafficking Bureau in Cyprus is intensifying its efforts to unravel a serious case involving an organized trafficking ring that is believed to be sexually exploiting women on the island. Among those implicated is a former football player, along with a Turkish Cypriot who is being investigated for possible involvement in the operation.
The case came to light after a woman reported a theft. However, upon further investigation by a specially trained police officer, it was discovered that the woman had visible injuries and bruises, suggesting a more serious situation than a simple theft. This led to a deeper inquiry and collaboration with the victim, ultimately revealing the perpetrators behind the trafficking ring.
Four individuals—three women and one man, all from Nigeria—have been arrested in connection with the case, while another suspect remains at large. According to Eleni Michael, head of the Anti-Trafficking Bureau, each person had a specific role within the ring. Some were responsible for recruiting victims in their home country, while others facilitated transportation to Cyprus and managed the sexual exploitation of the women.
Reports indicate that the first woman arrested is accused of withholding the victim’s passport. The second arrested woman allegedly colluded with her to engage in prostitution with the victim. A 27-year-old woman, along with a 29-year-old former football player, reportedly managed online advertisements that forced the victim into prostitution.
There are also reports suggesting that a Turkish Cypriot may be involved in the trafficking operation, allegedly picking up victims from the illegal Tymbos airport and transporting them to free areas. However, these claims have yet to be confirmed, as noted by Eleni Michael.
As investigations continue, the authorities aim to identify the mastermind behind this trafficking ring and dismantle the operation to protect vulnerable individuals from further exploitation.
