Botond Csoma.

Hungary’s Minister of Construction and Transport held a joint press conference with Botond Csoma, the RMDSZ candidate for the Cluj (Kolozs) County Council on Wednesday in Cluj Napoca (Kolozsvár), Maszol.ro reported. According to János Lázár, there is a great need for the Hungarians in Romania to participate in the elections in as large a proportion as possible, as this is where the future of the Hungarian community in the next decade will be determined.

Botond Csoma stressed that the RMDSZ (Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania) had achieved good results in the summer elections and he hoped that this would be the case in the next ones. “We have no secret intention to get back into government after the parliamentary elections. While the RMDSZ was in government, common sense was in government. Since then, there has been a lot of improvisation, bickering, and measures that are not in the interest of the citizens,” the candidate explained.

He said that the RMDSZ is involved in ethnic politics and Hungarian issues, but also in issues that affect Romania’s affairs.

At the moment, the relationship between the state and citizens is complicated, citizens do not trust the state,”

he stressed. Among the goals of the RMDSZ is that “the tax system should support people who pay their taxes honestly, thus we envision a state that respects citizens,” explained Csoma.

János Lázár, Hungary’s Minister of Construction and Transport, also attended the press conference. He said there were two reasons for his visit to Cluj Napoca: on the one hand, to commemorate the victims of the 1956 revolution in Transylvania, and on the other hand, to support the RMDSZ in the campaign.

He explained that the RMDSZ had achieved its best electoral results in the last 20 years in the local and European elections, but the question is how the alliance will fare in the big political battle in the autumn. “It is necessary for the Hungarian community in Romania to participate in the parliamentary elections in as large a proportion as possible, as the stakes are much higher,” he stressed.

The Minister believes that when the RMDSZ was in government, it had three major positive consequences:

it boosted the settlements and regions where Hungarians live, it put the problems of Hungarians on the agenda, and it strengthened Hungarian-Romanian governmental cooperation.

On the presidential election, he said that the RMDSZ has a brave, honest, and talented candidate in Hunor Kelemen. “In Hungary, we are very proud that one of the most prepared Hungarian politicians of today’s generation is a candidate for president. He has experience, he is well-established in Romanian politics, and he represents common sense,” concluded Lázár.
