A majority of eligible New Yorkers have registered as organ donors.
Governor Kathy Hochul made the announcement on Wednesday, October 23. It’s the first time in state history the milestone has been reached.
“This is a very important milestone for New York and the thousands of New Yorkers who are waiting for a life-saving organ transplant,” said Governor Kathy Hochul.

A decade ago, only 22 percent of New Yorkers were registered as organ donors, leaving many who needed a transplant without options. On average,400 people New Yorkers lose their life each year due to a shortage of donors, according to the Governor’s office.
Nearly 8,000 New Yorkers are currently on the waitlist for a life-changing organ. Anyone 16 or older can join the New York State Donate Life Registry online here.
