Auction house CEO: Ohtani 50-50 home run ball sale is 'record-breaking' A US auction house says the sale of Major League star Ohtani Shohei’s 50-50 home run ball for 4.4 million dollars is “record-breaking” in “every way.”

Ohtani became the first player in Major League history to achieve 50 home runs and 50 stolen bases in a single season in a game against the Miami Marlins last month.

The home run ball was put up for auction online on September 27 and was sold for 4.392 million dollars on Tuesday.

The CEO of the auction house, Ken Goldin, told NHK on Wednesday that the bidding “took off like a rocket ship.”

Goldin said the auction itself was record-breaking. He said having the ball is owning “a piece of history.” He said it has become the most valuable ball, not just in baseball, but in any sport.

He added that the buyer wants to remain anonymous.
