Putin hints at using nuclear weapons in certain circumstances Russian President Vladimir Putin has hinted at using nuclear weapons by calling for changes in the rules for their deployment.

Putin held a meeting of the country’s Security Council on nuclear deterrence on Wednesday.

He proposed changes in Russia’s nuclear doctrine. He said the current military and political situation is dramatically changing, and Moscow must take that into account.

He said an attack by a nonnuclear nation with the participation or support of a nuclear power would be considered to be a joint attack. This seems to suggest Russia could use nuclear weapons in response.

Putin also said Moscow would consider the option if the country obtains reliable information that a large number of missiles and aircraft had been launched and crossed the Russian border.

Ukraine is asking Western countries to lift restrictions on the use of long-range weapons they provide to enable targets in Russia to be attacked.

Putin’s remark is seen as a warning against Ukraine’s request.
