Moldovans to vote in presidential election, EU membership referendum Voters in Moldova are set to cast their ballots on Sunday in the country’s presidential election, and a referendum on acceding to the European Union.

The former Soviet republic officially began negotiations on EU accession in June. It borders Ukraine, where Russia is continuing its invasion.

The presidential vote pits pro-Western incumbent Maia Sandu against pro-Russian contestants and others. The latest opinion poll puts Sandu far ahead of her challengers. It also shows 63 percent of respondents are in favor of joining the EU.

The Sandu administration is accusing the pro-Russian side of mounting massive election meddling to block Moldova from becoming an EU member.
It alleges that the scheme includes bribing voters using large amounts of cash.

The United States, Britain and other countries have also expressed concerns about the allegations. But the pro-Russian side is denying the charges.
