At approximately $45M Aud (according to the video), some back-of-the-napkin maths shows that's about 3-4 months worth of Bridge tolls at the current rates and capacity.

Even if it has to be more expensive to handle more lanes it's more than worth an entire year of tolls to prevent these horrible accidents and prevent the insane economic cost of this vital arterial road being closed.

  1. Money isn’t an object here, the object is an object. In order to install a lane zipper, you’d have to sacrifice a lane.

  2. Thank you for this post. I think it’s a great idea.

Safety and still allows the flex with peak hour traffic

  3. I’ve always wondered why the SHB doesn’t have one of these.

I hope today’s tragic accident provokes the right kind of kneejerk reaction from the NSW State Government and they look into installing one.

  4. I’m sure it’s something they’ll look into once the second tunnel is up and running.

  5. We have:

    * the highest-capacity Metro line in the country opening within 7-8 years (Metro West)
    * the Bankstown line will have triple the frequency when its Metro conversion is finished in 11-12 months
    * all of the Airport, Inner West, Eastern Suburbs and Illawarra lines can run 40-50% more trains within a few years
    * the Western Harbour Tunnel is opening later this decade

I think we would be insane to keep the Harbour Bridge at the same configuration it is now when all of that is in play, it should be given 2 all-day bus-only lanes and the rest of the lanes widened to create an even split, remove the WD and the Cahill Expressway and slow speeds down – throttle it back basically.
