Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba expressed willingness to engage in dialogue with North Korea during a meeting on Thursday with the families of Japanese abductees kidnapped by North Korea.

According to Japan’s Kyodo News, the meeting took place at the Prime Minister’s residence, where the Japanese leader stressed that it’s crucial for the leaders to engage in candid discussions with “broad perspectives.”

The report noted that his remark reflects the Prime Minister’s eagerness for a summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un.

In his first press conference since taking office on October 1, Prime Minister Ishiba stressed the importance of resolving the issue of Japanese abductees, calling it one of the most important tasks for his cabinet.

His predecessor Fumio Kishida also sought to hold a summit with the regime’s leader to resolve the issue but failed to hold such high-level talks.
