This has been going on for decades, along with obscene tariffs. Normally this kind of price fixing should be sending people to jail, but this is Canada so we sort of take it, as usual.

The only good substantial economic defense for supply management is otherwise Canada would have to pay for subsides to keep it competitive, still seems way less regressive and wasteful  than  this.Â

And milk is quite emission-intensive to produce, not to mention the animal suffering involved. All just to go down the drain? Gross

The NDP should turn on supply management. It’s a tax on the poor to shovel more money to an elite class of farmers who literally inherit their privileged position in a cartel.
It would be a very easy to communicate policy: “we will cut grocery prices on day 1 by breaking up the cartel”. You’d lose votes in a few farming ridings, but the NDP is losing those anyway.

Just so frustrating.
