Dow, S&P 500 hit record highs Shares in New York extended gains on Monday on optimism for the US economic outlook. The benchmark Dow Jones Industrial Average and the S&P 500 both closed at fresh record highs.

The Dow rose 0.47 percent to hit the 43,000 mark for the first time. It closed at a record for the second straight trading day.

The broader S&P 500 gained 0.77 percent to end the day at 5,859.85.

Analysts say investors placed buy orders on expectations of robust US corporate earnings.
Shares of semiconductor giant Nvidia and other chip-related companies posted strong gains.
