Hi Guys

I’m currently at a crossroads in my educational and career journey. At 29 years old, I have just completed my HF Informatik Systemtechnik program. Now, I’m considering pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or Business Information Technology and have two options:

  1. Kalaidos University: I can complete a shortened Bachelor’s program in Informatics in 2 years for about CHF 990 per month while working full-time.
  2. Lucerne University of Applied Sciences (HSLU) or Fachhochschule Nordwestschweiz (FHNW): These state universities would require 3 to 4 years at a part-time capacity (60% workload) and cost around CHF 800 per semester.

The reputation of the institution is crucial for me. A degree from HSLU or FHNW is often viewed more favorably by employers, as far as I’ve heard. But going after Bachelor for another 3-4 year part-time seems to be not effective as I’ve already done the HF.

But I’ve come also across discussions about the potential downsides of less reputable institutions, raising concerns about how a faster degree from Kalaidos might affect my professional image in the long run. Like this news from Watson Link. Also there are not many reviews about this Passarelle program of Kalaidos.

Questions I have:

  • Is the time and cost savings in the end at Kalaidos worth the potential long-term impact on my career prospects? Would be glad to hear about the quality/workload, if someone did or is currently doing a passarelle at Kalaidos in CS/BIT.
  • Would the longer duration at HSLU or FHNW, with its associated costs, be justified by its stronger reputation? Especially that i would be 33 at the end of Bachelor.
  • How much do employers weigh the institution’s reputation when considering candidates with relevant experience? I hear alot of bad stuffs on private FHs.

I’d love to hear your thoughts and experiences. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!
