The current civil war between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) is not a conflict between Muslims and Christians; fighters on both sides are mostly Muslim, and both sides are security organs of the long-time Islamist dictatorship of General Omar al-Bashir, which have now turned on each other. However, ethnic and religious minorities are sometimes targeted by one or both sides, as in this case.

Shendi is 100 miles north of Khartoum Bahri. Shendi is under Army control. Most of Khartoum the capital is under RSF militia control. Khartoum Bahri is the northern city (the capital is three cities adjoined) where the army is making gains against the RSF militia.
I think they mean upon arrival at Shendi, refugees members of the Nuba (not to be confused with the unrelated Nubians) were targeted. The other confusing things is the Nuba often have mixed Muslim and Christian heritage and adapt Arabic names even though they are not Arabs.
I can believe the report based on experience living in Sudan that group is treated very bad even by Northerners and Southerners, Arabs and Nilotic African tribes even in peace times. The families I knew who owned slaves up till the 1930s (1980s in some cases) tended to have slaves from the Nuba mountains.
