  1. Why would Nigerians have a need to seek asylum? Is it not one of the most stable African countries politically and economically?

    Not sure how you fix the problem of existing African migrants. The unemployment rate for that group is catastrophic.

  3. Progress, but the situation regarding the number of asylum applications in Ireland in 2023 from Nigeria was an absolute joke particularly when putting it in context of the figures received by other countries.

    In 2023, aside from Cyprus, we had by far the highest per capita numbers of asylum applications from Nigeria in the world and it wasn’t even close. Take Canada out of the equation and the comparison of figures between Ireland and other countries is even more concerning.

    Numbers or Nigerian asylum applications per country in 2023 (6 countries with highest total numbers)

    Country: Population. Annual No. of applications
    Canada. 41.2 million. 9253

    United States. 345.4 million. 4350

    Italy. 58.3 million. 3995

    Germany. 84.5 million. 2357

    France. 66.5 million. 2268

    Ireland. 5.2 million. 2084

    UK. 69.6 million. 1263

    Now consider per capita rates;

    Ireland = 4.0 applications per 10,000 people

    Canada = 2.25 applications per 10,000 people

    Italy = 0.7 applications per 10,000 people

    France = 0.3 applications per 10,000 people

    Germany = 0.3 applications per 10,000 people

    UK = 0.18 applications per 10,000 people

    * Ultimately, the asylum system here is an absolute mess. Based on the above data the numbers of applications here from Nigeria in 2023 need to be drastically reduced. And of course, considering the distance of ireland to Nigeria and difficulty in travelling here from there, it’s quite clear that this is more about asylum shopping than ‘safety’.

    The old system and the stress it put on the civil servants interviewing candidates has literally killed people. Flawed from top to bottom.

    It’s crazy seeing these papers go out of their way to write stories about the same shit Russia is paying millions for idiots to consume ‘immigrants, immigrants.. immigrants of different colour.’

    People are obsessed.. which is fine. But why is maga and Russia paying millions to ensure problems re obsessed?!

    That’s whats throwing me… You think the idiots here aren’t on twitter and YouTube consuming that shite too.

    Immigration is a thing, but I’m getting well sick of idiots trying to make out like it causes every problem we have and always will….

    Especially when Russians get caught trying to covertly pump that into idiots heads..

    More efficient processing is the way to go. Over the long term, they’ll save money on paying accomodation/ maintenance etc to applicants that are stuck in the system
