Why are we like this? We used to build such good bridges and buildings and infrastructure. Now we pay billions for a bunch of contractors to tell us we can’t do it.

Can someone explain to me why it should cost that much to plan? I understand that engineering isn’t exactly cheap, but why is the planning so expensive?

Why are we SO BAD AT GETTING SHIT DONE?
We conquered half the planet, now we can’t build a tunnel.

If Sky had done any research, including a quick look at the Wikipedia page of the Laerdal Tunnel. They would have found that since 2019, the longest tunnel is in fact, the WestConnex in New South Wales.
>The forecast cost of WestConnex has grown from A$10Â billion[1] to over $45Â billion.[1] Once land acquisitions,[2] network extensions development costs and the cost of operations[3] are accounted for, the total cost is forecast to be at least $20Â billion and possibly as much as $45 billion.
With 1 GBP being either A$1.95.

London should just stop expanding, we already spend way too much on you. If you want to find a few billionaires to invest in your infrastructure that would be fine, just stop wasting our money on vanity projects.

It was a bad plan anyway since the design was so massively over engineered, wasteful, and very expensive for what it is, but at least it would have meant building something.
We need to just look at other countries and figure out how many of those can still do stuff cheap and quick. Can ignore China and a couple of other places if it’s unfair to use those, but it wont change much since if counting just Western countries theres still many that make us look like idiots in comparison.
I don’t care about roads because I don’t think we should be building more and more of those like this £10bn for a single tunnel, but with rail and major public transport things we should be able to bypass most NIMBY and 5+ rounds of consultations and stuff and just start building. If issues come up while building then the fix will still probably be much cheaper than how we do things now. Especially ultra deep(25m+) underground tunnels, they should be able to be fast tracked for all areas not beneathe skyscrapers.

Corruption…such a prime praising good values economy…Crossrail final budget shows that in vivid colours…
I wish some journalist look into Thames Water projects in London…
