  1. >Kirzner-Roberts said the recent report commissioned by the department confirmed her organization’s worst fears. **“It finds that more half of the individuals commemorated in the memorial may have been Nazis or Nazi collaborators,”** she said. “It is totally unacceptable for Nazis and collaborators to be honoured by a Canadian public memorial, especially one meant to recognize victims of state violence and tyranny.”

I mean, what can you even say, really? From the very get go these and other concern about the monument were raised. It’s been about 15 years, with literally millions of dollars of public funds being put into the memorial.

It’s unbelievable we got this far along in the process. It seems exceedingly clear to me we should just trash the whole thing and learn the lesson that the anti-communism that brought this horrible idea about always had clear ties to far-right extremism. Surely after applauding a genuine Nazi collaborator in the House of Commons we can start to learn a bit of history and context, no?

This was a Conservative boondoggle from the start. They wanted to virtue signal how awful communism was so they could attack socialism, knowing most of their supporters have no idea the difference. It is another copy of Republican type attacks. Cancel it and move on.

What a massive waste of money. Canada was never under a communist dictatorship, we never fought a protracted war to defeat a communist dictatorship, a communist country has never attempted to invade us. This monument commemorates nothing, and is transparently a virtue signal by the Harper government.

And now consequently, as a result of wading into a history they knew nothing about, they’ve managed to piss off several groups who actually experienced the events this monument claims to memorialize. What a joke.
