Joukahainen’s story is sad. He heard stories of Väinämöinen and was getting increasingly jealous of his impressive deeds. So he sought him up and challenged him to a dual. Once he found him, he threatened him to turn him into a pig (hence the pig at his leg). He continued to insult Väinämöinen until he had enough and the old sage started casting spells. He turned Joukahainen’s whip into reed, his sword into lightning and his gloves into lilies.
As Joukahainen pleaded with Väinämöinen to save his life, he promised him his sister, Aino.
