US dockworkers' union reaches deal with employers, ends strike A labor union representing dockworkers at East and Gulf Coast ports in the United States ended its strike on Thursday after it agreed with employers on a tentative wage deal.

The union began the strike on Tuesday as it failed to reach a deal over pay, the automation of tasks and other issues with the management side.

Both sides say they will extend the contract that expired on September 30, until mid-January of next year, and return to the bargaining table to negotiate other outstanding issues.

US media reported that the two sides agreed on a wage hike of more than 60 percent over six years.

About 45,000 workers at more than 30 ports, including those in New Jersey and Texas, took part in the strike.

If the strike had continued, a prolonged impact would have been feared on manufacturing and retail sectors before the end-of-year holiday season.
