The 28th Sakhalin Oil and Gas Energy Forum, a three-day meeting on the development of oil and natural gas, began on Wednesday.

Major oil and natural gas development is underway off Sakhalin under the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects. The projects are participated by Japanese trading houses and a consortium whose owners include the Japanese government.

In the first session on Wednesday, Sakhalin Governor Valery Limarenko celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Sakhalin-2 project.

The governor stressed that 2023 oil output in the Sakhalin-1 and Sakhalin-2 projects increased nearly 37 percent compared to the previous year.

US oil giant Exxon Mobil and British oil major Shell announced their withdrawal from the energy projects, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. But Japan maintains its stance of retaining an interest in the projects to protect its energy security.
