Realistically, nothing really. Unless I’m mistaken, the only Chinese-made EVs that were sold in Canada were certain Tesla models. Most of the actual affordable Chinese-made EVs weren’t sold in Canada.
With that said, over the long-term, this will mean significantly less competition and less options for Canadians, which will just push up prices further, exacerbating the cost-of-living crisis.

It means more expensive vehicles for Canadians. That’s generally what raising taxes means.
Long term this means that whatever local companies exist have no incentive to innovate and we will continue down the trend of productivity stagnation. Why bother doing the hard work to get better when you can complain to mommy who can get the other kids to go away?

It means Canadians just don’t get meaningful access to compact EVs. It’s not like our domestic markets are seriously trying to touch on them – they’re all in on pickups and SUVs. Just a stupid decision that lays bare how deep the government’s bleating about being serious with Climate Change actually goes

It means domestic car companies no longer need to compete with the affordable Chinese EVs so, simply, they won’t.
it means propping up failing geriatric car manufacturers that want young adults already in debt to pay 6 figures for a piece of shit truck and fuck up their life to protect their absurd profits and bonuses without changing anything. free market babyyyyy gas gas gas the numbers must always go up weeee
