  1. This simply lacks an air of reality to it.

What nations are willing to actually exercise force here? How will they project it, in the face of US disapproval? Even Iran is unwilling to come to the aid of its proxies militarily. Are other nations besides Iran going to contribute troops to protect Hezbollah? Seems very unlikely.

The notion, allegedly expressed by the Turkish leader, that this is the beginning of a general Israeli rampage against unnamed “Muslim nations” unless Israel is stopped now, is laughable. Or would be, if it wasn’t deeply upsetting to see a national leader publicly saying such obvious nonsense.

The real question is what Erdogan is hoping to achieve by this, besides playing to his own domestic Islamist gallery. The suspicion is that he’s simply hoping, as Iran is hoping, to prevent any budding Israeli/Sunni Arab alliance from being finalized, by mobilizing anger in the Arab “street”. Such an alliance would be against Turkish interests in the region, as it is against Iranian interests.
