Hello everyone 👋🏻 Yesterday I went on a trip to the abandoned airport in Kothen (Anhalt), passing the ruins of a windmill on the way (I think it’s a Dutch-type windmill) and I wanted to see the partially abandoned barracks buildings, then I went to the city center (as you can see, the Gagarin monument from DDR times are still doing well, seeing this I just thought it was a pity that Komarov didn’t get his due)
I didn’t go into the buildings themselves because I decided that there was no point in risking my health to see empty rooms, I only went into one barracks building. The airport itself and the buildings were built between 1923 and 1929. During the Cold War, planes from Köthen monitored the western borders of the Warsaw Pact countries and regularly flew between the Baltic Sea and Hungary. Flight days are Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. MiG-29 and Mi-24 were recently stationed here; flights ended in May 1991. The former barracks buildings are still empty or have been converted into administrative buildings for the Anhalt-Bitterfeld district administration. I don’t describe the photos because everyone can see what’s in them. The last photo is a plan of the barracks. Half of the buildings are empty, in August this year a teenager fell 6 meters and suffered serious bodily injury in the barracks. So the place is open and easily accessible. A 55-hectare photovoltaic farm was built on the runway and surrounding area. Best regards and have a nice afternoon. 😊
