Former US President Donald Trump has expressed his willingness to help achieve peace between Ukraine and Russia if he wins the presidential election in November.
Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at Trump Tower in New York on Friday. Zelenskyy visited the city for the UN General Assembly.
Trump, the Republican presidential candidate, said that “Before I would take the presidency, it’s January 20, but long before that, I think that we can work out something that’s good for both sides.”
Zelenskyy said, “We understand that till November, we can’t stop Putin.” But he added, “We hope that the strength of the United States will be very strong, and we count on it.”
Zelenskyy said he had explained to Trump Ukraine’s newly compiled “Plan for Victory,” which is aimed at bringing an end to Russia’s invasion.
On the previous day, Zelenskyy met with Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic presidential candidate in the November election.
Zelenskyy met both candidates apparently to secure continued support from the US regardless of who wins the presidency.
After his talks with Zelenskyy, Trump told Fox News, “I learned a lot, but I think I haven’t changed from the standpoint that we both want to see this end, and we both want to see a fair deal made, and it’s going to be fair.” But he did not mention any specific plan for realizing peace between Ukraine and Russia.
