Hafez Al Assad and his son Bahsar Al Assad have proven themselves realists, Syria did enter int peace negioations with Israel in the 1990s, and 2010 (that one got sort of close), attended the Madrid conference in 1991, joined the Gulf War coalition against Saddam Hussein Iraq, and hasnt went to war again over the Golan Heights, even after 9/11 syria help the us st times when it came to Syrian Al qaeda suspects in the rendition program.

The conflict with Syria and Israel more about the Golan Heights, and Syria ties to Hezbollah and Iran, than any islamic fundamentalist agenda or fantasies, and Syria ties with Iran are based on the Alawites being recognized as fellow muslims going back to Iranian mullahs recognizing them as a shia sect in the 1970s, the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s, cheap oil and gas, the Lebanese file, the us presence in Iraq in the Iraq war, and preventing a Sunni domination that would persecute Alawites, Alieves, Druze, Eastern Christian's (from Oriental Orthodox to Eastern Orthodox to melkite and other Eastern rite Catholics, even Latin Roman Catholics, etc.) And of course Shia in the process.
