There has been (only little) discussion about raising further the maximum amount of deductible. According to estimates from the CSSa deductible of 10,000CHF could lower the monthly premium by about 170CHF, this was in 2018, so nowadays it could reduce it by probably 200CHF.

The main benefits:

  • Lower premiums
  • More focus on personal responsibility and control of costs

The main drawbacks:

  • Less solidarity: people with more financial capacity would contribute less
  • Potentially increasing the premiums of lower deductible, as there might be less contribution overall
  • Risks of delayed care (however I don’t know if it would be a major change from the 2,500CHF deductible)

I wonder what would be your stance on that, it’s a tradeoff of Personal Responsibility and Solidarity. This might be a bit too extreme on the personal responsibility slider.

Some opponents claimed that it would not be possible, as many people might face a sudden expense of 10,000CHF that they wouldn’t be able to pay. But this could be solved by requiring to put 10,000CHF on a caution account to access that (20% return on that, as about 2,000CHF could be saved)

What is your opinion on higher deductibles?

yeah I’m sure that won’t go wrong. just look at the amount of people that take the 2500 CHF franchise and then are all like surprised pikachu when they actually need to pay their franchise…. there is like 1-2 threads like that every week here

  2. At the moment I don’t get it – I am sure I am missing something.

It is just a clown show about balancing the monthly fees vs the deductibles.

There is no solution about the fact that there is n cost which has to be paid by all the patients (there seems not “outside” flow of money into the health system?).

There is no information about the underlying issue…and how we can tackle those.

So, if I had 300 CHF, and now 500 CHF deductible – what does that change for me? Does the monthly payment change for me? Will it be cheaper? Will it be enough to cover those 200 CHF difference? I am in debt anyhow, right?
And if I am one those unlucky that have chronic issues, nothing will change for me – it might get even worse.

And no matter – how does that teach me “personal responsibility”?
I pay it one way or another – either by raised monthly payment or by raised deductible (which affects everyone, not no “personal” individual).

I am not looking for a perfect solution (there is none, never will be – lets face it and be honest).
However, it seems to be politics – as usual – and not really adressing the underlying issues and dealing with harsh truths and changes.

But then again – I have no other reasonable solutions myself as I have no idea how all of this actually works (internally, with lobbying, and taxes and real costs and all that).
    I have a few non-resonable solutions, sure – but I ain’t going to disclose them 🙂
