Does anyone have any sources of data for how long the prisons have been at total capacity? Have heard things anecdotally but can’t find a decent official source

  2. On the one hand – my heart bleeds /s

On the other hand – built more prison spaces

On the other hand – learn the lessons from the Children’s Hospital and tender correctly with provisions which protect the taxpayer.

  3. We’ve needed a new prison for years, but seeing how they can’t build hospitals I’m not holding my breath. Joke govt. for a joke country.

  4. It’d be such a nightmare to try to build a new prison somewhere in this country. Ungodly number of objections combined with the TDs in whatever constituency it’s in trying to do anything they can to oppose it.

And the public will vote for this…again.

Also to state the obvious as I’ve seen no one else say it, this impacts sentencing and leads to higher numbers of people who would otherwise be going to prison going straight back out on the streets.

But yeah, keep the chaos going Ireland.

  6. Hey, here’s an out of the world idea. How about, as a country, we celebrate the fact that we have unused prison space, we’re so safe that we can’t fill our prisons, wouldn’t that be a nice metric for the government to soapbox on.

    So yeah, more prisons.

  7. Give BAM the contract to build a new, modern, prison with space to grow. BIG TWIST – BAM to use prisoners for construction.

But Thornton Hall was better used as a giant camp for asylum chancers, a decent amount of whom will likely add to the prison overcrowding themselves.

  9. Not being funny or intentionally missing the point or anything – but can I just say – majority of the people around the world, sleeps on mattresses on the floor? That’s all.

  10. Why are we not building more prisons if they have to sleep on the floor? The money they will end up paying out in compensation would probably cover the cost.

We need a public private partnership to sort this issue out!

  12. When a nation values nothing but profit above anything else they turn into US.

Ireland is slowly turning into a mini America but without the vast human and monetary sources of America…

This island and it’s people headed towards a rude awakening…

  13. Weren’t we supposed to build a “super prison” at the Thornton Hall site 20 years ago?
Like similar projects, the same FF wankers in power now can never pull the finger out and do what they’re supposed to.

  14. Oh how i know this’ll trigger people… fuck it, it’s a valid opinion.

Why should we care? They made their choices which landed them in prison, it could be far, far worse (look at prisons even in other EU countries, they don’t get half of what the lot over here get). Why waste taxpayer money making societal leaches comfortable? Murderers, rapists, drug dealers, why do they deserve comfort? Why do we have genuine homeless people who need accommodation, meanwhile we’re wasting money on these creatures…

  15. Beg the Chinese to build our infrastructure. Then get the American multinationals to pay for it. We can call it diplomacy and peace building.

  16. If only Thornton site was used for its original purpose as another prison and not housing asylum seekers from safe countries.

  17. Wonder how many are in for short sentences for possession or petty crime.

Not sure there’s anything achieved by giving short sentences to non violent offenders

But I’m old fashioned in that I believe less crime and less reoffending should be the goal so we should follow evidence based policy on what works

  18. Is that….bad?

I sleep on a mattress that’s just one foot off the floor.

The only negative to having the mattress on the floor is that it just requires more effort to get up in the morning.

… build the prisons needed – but maybe stop the problem before it’s a problem and invest in our youth instead of Leaving them grow feral – educate them – invest in them – surely b ta god it’s not that bloody hard to do

  20. Growing population means we need more of everything, I also don’t get the opposition to a prison being built in a given area, a prison isn’t going to make an area less safe but Irish people love a planning objection

At the same time we’re locking people up for drug possession petty theft like shoplifting (often by addicts) and TV license offences. Which I’d argue is a poor use of prison space if the goal is reducing crime, if the goal is to simply punish without reducing crime then I guess it works.

But I rather our system be aiming to rehabilitate people, and there’s a mountain of evidence that suggests more and harsher sentencing doesn’t do that. Problem is there is a strong desire in people to want a punative system regardless of if it has any impact on reducing crime or not
