Is it even legal to have a poster up about the election before it’s even called?

  1. They can put up paid advertisements on those types of boards whenever they like. It’s only the temporary election posters that get stuck up everywhere around election time that are regulated.

  2. It is not an election poster.
Nowhere does he ask for your vote.
It is a personal advertisement on a dedicated space for advertising.

  3. They normally just put posters up of themselves advertising a free public meeting on some bullshit topic.

  4. That’s completely normal, I used to walk past a massive Mary Lou McDonald billboard for years when I lived in her constituency. It was one of those massive billboards that you’d see on the side of a building. I’d imagine it’s likely still there.

  5. He knew well he was going for a Dáil seat, the selfish prick only went for the Mayor’s
    role to boost his profile.

  6. I’ve already had canvassers call to the door in the last week, I just asked of the election was called for yet, and closed the door, one was definitely FF as I still have the little flyer, I can’t remember who the other was… they are definitely gearing up.

  7. A lot of the time TDs and councillors have posters around advertising meetings, etc. it’s only the big posters you see on lampposts that can only be put out 1 month prior

I wish election posters were Illegal, ugly lumps of plastic on every street post, fine them all for littering.

  9. It’s not an election poster, those are the ones on poles with those fucking cable ties. Anyone, can buy advertising space for any reason at any time, it’s why we should ban the fuck out of election posters entirely, let them use the advertising space that’s available just like everyone else would have to.

  10. They can only put up temporary election posters **after** the election date is fixed and a maximum of 30 days before. They have to be down again 7 days after the election.

If you see any posters flying up, report to your local council.

Advertising on bus shelters doesn’t fall withing this remit.

  11. I’ve seen these for a few weeks now. Guarantee we’ll have a November election. They’re trying to get ahead of the opposition with electioneering.

  12. We got a pamphlet in the post a few days ago. And it was exactly what I was thinking. It was a Sinn Féin pamphlet

There are also a few on bus stops in Dublin Bay North for the FG candidate.

Seems odd to be spending this much money so far out from when they say there’s going to be an election…

  14. I’m willing to wager that candidates with the most election posters tend to fail to win a seat.

In Louth, John Mcgahon had the whole place kitted out with election posters and he polled very poorly. I have a feeling the ‘in your face approach’ just doesn’t bode well in Ireland anymore.

  15. Such a poster is fine, but the actual ones that go up everywhere, on utiliuty poles and whatnot, can only go up 30 days before an announced election date. If a date isn’t announced, you’re free to call up your local council or whomever is responsible and tell them about the littering offence you’ve just witnessed.
