Motorcycle makers developing more moped-style electric models Japan’s motorcycle makers are developing more moped-style electric models as they phase out production of gasoline bikes in the 50cc category.

The shift comes ahead of stricter carbon emission regulations to be introduced next year.

Honda Motor has four of these electric bikes on the market. The company says a model it launched in the summer of last year can run for more than 50 kilometers on a single battery charge.

It plans to supply two versions to other companies by spring 2025. It will also develop more models.

Suzuki Motor is developing an electric bike with pedals. It says a single charge will give a 20 kilometer driving range. It should be on the market as early as next year.

However, the companies face challenges in marketing the electric models. They are more expensive than conventional bikes and can drive limited distances on a single battery charge.
