  1. I don’t like hyping up youth prospects as next big thing because it really does put a lot of pressure of those boys or girls

  2. 17 year old football genius Choe Ilson. The youngest of the group was the one who lead North Korea to its U-20 world cup trophy.

On the 23rd, North Korea defeated Japan 1:0 with Choe’s goal in the final match of the 2024 FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, held in Estadio Nemesio Camacho El Campin, located in Bogota, Colombia.

North Korea claimed their third trophy after the 2006 and 2010 editions of the competition. Only themselves, Germany, and USA have so far achieved such a feat. Choe Ilson, the scorer of the deciding goal of the match, claimed the tournament’s Golden Boot with six goals, and was also awarded the Golden Ball as the most valuable player. Japan, who have been denied of their win again North Korea, have been placed runner-up twice in a row after 2022.

The North Korean team led by head coach Ri Songho was a team that could only be described by the words ‘the best’. They were the best in this competition in terms of physicality, technique, tactics and more. They scored 17 goals altogether in the three group stage matches, and defeated Austria, Brazil, and USA in the round of 16, quarterfinal, and semifinal games respectively. They also clean sheeted their quarterfinal to final games, and left a record of 7 games played, 25 goals scored, and 4 goals conceded.

Even in the final match against Japan, North Korea crushed Japan with their offensive play. The one who decided the match would be the ‘seventeen year old girl Messi’ Choe Ilson, who had also scored the winning goal against USA in the semifinals.

Choe, who boasts a confident person-to-person playstyle and speed, with a knack for gaining space in the front, shot towards the far post near the edge of the penalty area in the 15th minute, and the ball flew in a curve just past the head of the Japanese defender and found the back of the net.

North Korea’s strong attacks continued while keeping control of play by surpassing Japan in activeness and person technique. Japan, who was aiming for vengeance after losing against North Korea twice in the group stages and in the final of the Asian competition held in March this year, couldn’t make their goals. Japan was trailing behind in total shots(3:6), and shots on target(0:4) in the first half.

North Korea continued to threaten the Japanese goal with sideline breaks and crosses towards Choe in the second half, and pressed on their opponents by building up with long passes from the back and utilizing their dribbling and passing skills. Although some of them suffered cramps in their legs towards the end of the match, they still managed to keep their single leading goal.

Although Japan went for an all-out attack in the injury time of the second half, involving their goalkeeper in the free kick chance, North Korea’s own goalkeeper Chae Un Kyong sealed the victory by defending the goal with strong focus.

Choe, the hero of the match, stated in the interview, ‘I cannot contain my happiness from thinking that I can report this victory and championship to our loving motherland and parents and kin, who have birthed me and raised me.’

Choe is also eligible to play in the U20 world cup in Poland to be held in two years. The young players of the North gained experience with this competition.

Head coach Ri Songho, who had shaped the North Korean team into the best of the tournament, stated that, ‘We were able to win the trophy because our players believed in themselves and joined up as a team until the very end. I wish to give the report of loyalty to our beloved comrade Kim Jong Un, (WHEEZE) who gave our women’s football players love and lead us here to be crowned champions’.
