Was not aware of this type of fine, it's been a while since I got one. I've had one before that was speeding through an orange/red light but not elapsed time? I don't recall this incident exactly but I wasn't speeding, maybe I had to brake going through an orange light. Either way for a split decision 'mistake' down to the micro seconds, the fine is so expensive plus demerit points. It's ridiculous. Any way I can contest this?

  1. “Down to micro seconds”
Over half a second is a long time after a red. Suck it up and pay the fine, and do better.

Only ways I can see you successfully getting out of it (very unlikely) are:

    1. If you weren’t driving.
    2. If the red light camera can be proven to be faulty.

Otherwise, no. Red light offences aren’t forgiven like low range speeding for example.

  3. Giving you the time on red is a bit funny and pedantic, but what they will come back with is that you should have stopped on the yellow unless it was not safe to do so.

  4. Just go to court. Depending on your driving history/ other infringements, this may get completely waved- but you must go to court. Judges understand split second decisions and if you don’t have a bad history, it is likely they won’t fine you, possibly won’t give you points either.

You must have gone through just after it turned red. It should have ways to contest it on the back of the letter. I just paid mine. Oh and 0.6 seconds is quite a long time actually if you think about it.

  6. I believe this means the light had been red for 0.6 seconds at the time you were detected crossing the stop line.

  7. I mean, you chanced it going through a long orange light. It’s entirely your fault for not paying attention.

You drove through a red light! Follow the instructions to see the photo.

They’re literally called red light camera for a reason. Some of them also do speed but they all do red lights.

The penalty is harsh especially when the culture is often trying to sneak around on the orange at least for turning. But you either have to resist the temptation of trying to run the lights or work out where all the cameras are.

  9. Yellow lights are individually calibrated to allow enough time to stop based on the speed limit of the area. You had plenty of time to stop and 0.6 seconds red is actually a fair amount of time tbh.

  10. At 60km/h on Epsom road (if you were doing the limit) you travel at approximately 16.5m/s. A yellow light is on for a minimum of 3 seconds, plus another 0.6 seconds for the time you ran the red, you had around 60 meters to stop. Cop the fine and drive better running a red is the best way to kill someone.

  11. This means that when you crossed the line, it had already been red for half a second. Not only that, there is likely slack built into this, so it was likely more than this in reality.

No chance you’re getting out of this.

You entered the intersection 0.6secs after the light turned red, there’s no excuse for that since you get a couple of seconds of yellow warning you to stop.

  13. “Split second mistakes” can kill when you’re driving a couple of tonnes of steel down the road, take it as a lesson to pay attention.

And btw entering the intersection over half a second after it changed to red is not “down to the micro seconds” lol, you had a bunch of seconds during the yellow when you should have started to stop but you decided to hope it didn’t go red and it did, and those seconds kept going as you crossed the intersection. Stiff shit – pay your fine and do better next time.

  14. >maybe I had to brake going through an orange light. Either way for a split decision ‘mistake’ down to the micro seconds, the fine is so expensive

The sensor is at the point of *entering* the intersection. What that is showing is that the light was already red for 0.6 seconds when you crossed the traffic control line.

Given that it would have been yellow for at *least* 3 seconds before that, it wasn’t really that much of a ‘split second’ mistake.

  15. You fail to follow the lights, you get a ticket. There’s nothing to contest.

They won’t accept ‘couldn’t be fucked stopping’ as an excuse.
