Local Chinese paper says suspect admits to stabbing Japanese boy A local newspaper in the southern Chinese city of Shenzhen says the suspect in Wednesday’s deadly attack on a Japanese student has admitted to the allegation. But the paper stopped short of reporting on his motivation or the background behind the attack.

The ten-year-old boy was assaulted by a knife-wielding man while on his way to a Japanese school, accompanied by a family member. He later died in hospital. Authorities detained the suspect at the scene.

Shenzhen Special Zone Daily, a Communist Party bulletin published by the municipal committee, carried the first detailed report on the incident online on Friday.

The report said the boy is a Japanese national, and his father and mother are Japanese and Chinese citizens, respectively.

It quoted a doctor as saying that a number of medical experts did their best to save him, but he died due to the severity of his injuries.

The bulletin said the 44-year-old suspect, whose family name is Zhong, has admitted to stabbing the boy, adding that the attack was not premeditated and was carried out by a single perpetrator.

It said the suspect has no steady job, and has been detained by the authorities twice before on allegations that include vandalizing a public facility.
