      “The parts of controversial criminal justice legislation that deal with incitement to violence and hatred – commonly known as the hate speech elements – will be removed and the Government will proceed only with other elements that deal with hate crime. This provides for tougher sentences where hate is proven as a motivation for an offence.”

      “Existing laws on the prohibition of incitement to hatred, dating from 1989, will now not be repealed and will remain in force.”

      Yeah, maybe work on enforcing the actual law rather than coming up with extra laws that they also won’t enforce.

      I laud her for the intention as no right minded person wants hate speech, but hard cases make bad law. In this case my concern was that it was either unenforceable or worse was so restrictive to stifle open discussion.

      A real disappointment tbh, we’ve seen with the riots last year that we badly need extra legislation in place to ban hate speech. You only have to briefly examine that utter cesspit X/Twatter to see why it’s needed so urgently.

      The government are all talk on this stuff, and little follow through. We saw on the Prime Time special how bad these utter hate filled vermin can be, and now they can behave with carte blanche knowing they’ll never be made accountable for their actions

      There was pressure building for this for the past year or so. TDs realised this was extremely unpopular and thankfully have listened, unlike what they did with the referendums earlier this year.

      Hate speech laws were a terrible idea and would have been extremely difficult to enforce anyway. Good to see them dropping it at last.

      Good. Hate is subjective, speculative, and difficult to measure. It is a terrible metric to use, and the hurt felt by it can be easily exaggerated and manipulated.

      If someone had beaten me up for being LGBT, I’d just want a normal assault charge, no special hate crime treatment.

      As for actual hate speech, not being allowed to hate a religion? In a free society? That shit can get pretty dangerous.
