    As per [original article](https://www.mediaite.com/politics/politically-beyond-stupid-mcconnell-breaks-with-trump-over-government-shutdown-urges-gop-to-avoid-at-all-costs/) 📰:

    – GOP Senate Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) took questions on Capitol Hill on Tuesday and told the press that he would do whatever it takes to avoid a government shutdown, arguing that “It would be politically beyond stupid” for the Republicans to do so ahead of the election.

McConnell was asked by an off-camera reporter, “Susan Collins said yesterday that a six-month CR could have a devastating impact on defense spending. Do you think your House colleagues should drop this idea of six months?”

“I think we first have to wait and see what the House sends us. My only observation about this whole discussion is the one thing you cannot have is a government shutdown. *It would be politically beyond stupid for us to do that right before the election, because certainly we’d get the blame,”* McConnell replied bluntly, adding:

“And one of my favorite old sayings is there’s no education in a second kick of a mule. We’ve been here before. I’m for whatever avoids the government shutdown and that’ll ultimately end up obviously being a discussion between the Democratic leader and the speaker of the House as to how to process avoiding government shutdown.”

McConnell’s remarks are a sharp break with former President Donald Trump who posted a message to his fellow Republicans last week, urging members of his party in Congress to shut down the federal government unless they get “assurances” his roundly debunked claims of voter fraud will not happen.

“If Republicans in the House, and Senate, don’t get absolute assurances on Election Security, THEY SHOULD, IN NO WAY, SHAPE, OR FORM, GO FORWARD WITH A CONTINUING RESOLUTION ON THE BUDGET. THE DEMOCRATS ARE TRYING TO “STUFF” VOTER REGISTRATIONS WITH ILLEGAL ALIENS. DON’T LET IT HAPPEN – CLOSE IT DOWN!!!” Trump posted on his Truth Social account.

Trump has long claimed that the 2020 presidential election was stolen despite countless court cases and audits showing that there was no significant voter fraud that caused him to lose by some seven million votes. Trump and his GOP allies have already begun to claim that the 2024 election will be stolen, further undermining faith in the country’s electoral system – a key tenet of U.S. democracy.

  2. Mitch is evil but he’s not stupid. He knows what a shut down would do to his party just before an election.

  3. Sea-Tradition-9676 on

“Stupid” is Trump’s middle name. His feefees were hurt and he must retaliate. Damn the consequences.

  4. McConnell is the one living person who has arguably done the most damage to the United States. He is pretty much directly responsible for the composition of the current Supreme Court. Screw him.

  5. Thomas Massie is right

    its political theatre

they are going to pass a 6 month clean CR and the 2 trillion deficit goes on

  6. Trump thinks he can say Biden is at fault for shutting down the government, but most people know it’s congress that controls it and the GOP still has the majority of congress so they would take the blame right before elections.

  7. True to Mitch “Putin’s Other Bitch” McConnell form, he’s more concerned with the political ramifications than the impact on the American people.

  8. And the truth is if they’re able to achieve it, the main objective/thought process of every republican would be this – “ok how or what can we do that will have as negative an impact as possible on US constituents, that we then can use to our advantage in the polls.” With absolutely ZERO concern for how it affects those voters lives, as long as they blame it on Democratic ineptitude.

    “Politically stupid.”

How about you just focusing on what’s best for Americans and the country instead of putting everything in terms of political gains and losses?

Don’t listen to him Trump. He’s never put you first like he should have! Prove to America you truly are the chaos candidate! Own it and show your strength! Nothing is fair! RINO!! 😆😆😂😂

  11. He’s not wrong, but also what an asshole. He doesn’t care that’s it bad for the country, he cares because it’s bad for Republicans.

  12. Silent_Cress8310 on

    “politically beyond stupid…”

Yeah, sounds in character. Let’s get ready for a government shutdown.

  13. TopLingonberry4346 on

If it’s “beyond stupid” then surly those wanting it, like Trump, are themselves “beyond stupid” right? Right?

  14. And tbe reason: ‘…because certainly, we’d get the blame’.
Not because it would ruin peoples lives or the country or something. Incredable. ‘We’d get the blame’. Yeah. That because you ARE to blame.
He says actually he would not have a problem to burn the place and fly the plane into the ground, ‘but only if we can shift the blame to the dems’.

  15. McConnell, the architect of Citizens United…the worst thing to EVER happen to America!!

No, sorry…legal or not, it’s fucking IMMORAL.
You cannot simultaneously have a democracy and unlimited campaign contributions.

And we are fucking seeing the results!!
Wake up. Push back against American corporations and the greedy narcissistic assholes whom own & run them.
    GOTV!

  16. I agree with McConnell. But I also know that the Democrats will seek the largest possible budget. So “all costs” needs to be moderated. In the end this means a lot of real time analysis and the usual brinksmanship.
