What a wonderful idea it’s been running councils on commercial street rates. Definitely doesn’t kill small business and low intensity activity before it can develop.

I get Donegal, Sligo Mayo etc being on the poor list but why is Galway in the Red. Big enough spot, industry, motorways to Dublin and Limerick. Weird one.

Our local village introduced parking charges about 4 years ago. Lots of shops have closed since then. People just aren’t interested in going into the town for a browse or to meet up for a coffee etc when they have to pay to park.
Now maybe the shops were on the way out anyway, but there are definitely less people just going into the town now.

  4. Should convert a load of these places into apartments over the shops and maybe there would be a need to have the shops open again.

I have a place in dublin I want to rent for the last 7 years, the price is mad, the place is empty at least for the last 15 years (google maps pics) , they want a astronomical sum of money for a 30m2 shop. The shop will still be empty the next 15 years I think.

And then if you find a place, you get killed with taxes and fees.

irish government only like big companies, they don’t want their population pumping the local economy.

  6. Take the beauticians ,hairdressers/barbers and charity shops out of Skibbereen and there’s not much left…….
