The most baffling aspect of current infrastructure policy has to be the slow walking of Luas expansion. The Cork Luas route was supposed to be published in 2022, that was delayed to 23, then early 24 and there’s still no sign of it.
Luas Finglas and Luas Lucan also delayed. Even the easy extensions, like Luas Poolbeg!

This Luas will be ridiculously short as well. The Eastern terminus will be about a 10 to 15 minute easy cycle from the city centre.
I have no idea why it’s not being extended to Carrigaline. That will cover the part of the city and commuter belt that actually needs public transport to get in

It was in the original plan but then the decision making lads in Dublin discovered the proposed stop was actually Cork City and not Cork Street as they originally thought so they axed it straight away.

I thought we all knew that a Light Rail system in Cork was just a work of speculative science fiction were Ireland is run by forward looking, non self-serving, competent politicians? Same with the Dublin Metro.

Honestly, at this point we should just aim to constantly have a Luas line under construction in order to build expertise and maintain skills. Once we’ve got Cork covered with a sprawling Luas line, we can start building a network around Limerick. Then do Galway. Just keep fecking building the things.

Sigh…. No sign of light rail. No new rail routes in Cork County, the second most populous in the country. No direct rail services between Cork and Killarney, Limerick or Waterford. No direct motorway between Cork and Limerick. Airport run by Dublin Airport Authority and precious few routes out of it, saddled with a debt it was promised not to have…

I currently live in a European city with roughly the same population of Cork and it has 16 tram lines and 13 trolley bus lines

I wonder what odds paddy power would give you on a metro to Dublin airport before Cork gets it’s own Luas? Might be worth a punt.
