Tochigi Zoo celebrates wallaby's longevity on Respect for Aged Day A zoo in Tochigi Prefecture, north of Tokyo, has celebrated the long life of a wallaby on Respect for the Aged Day.

The male wallaby named Max turned 13 years old in August in Utsunomiya Zoo. A wallaby is similar to a kangaroo, but smaller in size.

To celebrate his long life on Monday, Max was given special cakes made mainly from corn, his favorite food. He ate them with excitement, with many visitors looking on.

Zoo officials say wallabies cared for by humans usually live about 10 to 15 years. In terms of human age, Max is about 80 years old.

They say Max is easy-going and enjoys sunbathing.

The zoo treated visitors to a special opportunity to interact with Max.

An elementary school fourth-grader from another prefecture said Max was cute, and had fluffy fur. She said it was her first time to see a wallaby, and that she wanted to come back again.

Zookeeper Nakazato Erika said she hopes Max will continue enjoying his life in a relaxed way.
