Bet they’ll also stop anyone having a nice can along the canal
I’m in 2 minds over the whole canal situation. On the one hand I feel we should be able to allow AS space to pitch a tent but at the same time we really should be offering proper accommodation. Where are we sending those who are seeking a better life? Are we just shoving them into paint factories? Why can’t we get them a proper place to live? Could they get PPS numbers so they can work and claim proper benefits? Surely they’d be entitled to it? I’m always hearing of places closing because they can’t get staff.
It’s such a mess tbh, there’s ugly barriers up and down the canal, now patrols. What has this country come to
If only government could do something about that …
*”Festival season is over lads”*
Waterways Ireland can be such a pox. Carlow Council wanted to upgrade a path along the Barrow and for months it seems WI wouldn’t even respond to their correspondence.
Imagine getting a job with these guys and going ‘I’ll be punting up and down the canals of the nation, watching water pour through the locks, spotting kingfishers and counting cygnets, ah what a life’ … but then you end up being the state’s immigration policy enforcer. how the turn tables
Won’t someone please think of the fencing?
If they are patrolling it then they need to take away those God awful fences.
Can’t have it both ways wasting taxpayer money. One or the other.
Doesn’t the country already employ people to patrol the streets?
So two lads with all the power of a Dunnes security guard are now the front line of Irelands asylum seeker policy, and that’s a good thing?
These lads will stop precisely fuck all
What are they gonna do, stop people pitching a tent? The lads will just pitch it when they walk away
Isn’t it time now that the government admits there’s a problem here?

In fairness what powers do the canal agents actually have? Can they physically touch people to remove them or their property from a canal bank? I don’t think so. Can they issue them with a fine, probably in theory.
But here is how I imagine that conversation going.
I am giving you a fine, what is your address?
Well because I am in a tent and being moved my address is side of the road, Ireland!
Can I have your ID to get your name? No sorry I destroyed that at the airport!!
As useless as to tits on a bull!
The gardai should have been patrolling the waterway banks and other public areas from the start. The minute cams started to be formed people should have been arrested or sent away.
There is no point in closing the stable gates after the horses have already bolted.
Meanwhile the government casually burns 300k on a bike rack. Niw wasting money on this shameful activity. Priorities are are all over the shop.
