Did you know that the US ambassador in Serbia, Mr. Christopher Hill, is advocating for extremely detrimental lithium mining in Serbia?

Please accept my apologies if this is the wrong sub, but I wanted to try to do at least something, as opposed to watching the enormous injustice with my hands down. I strongly believe that the people of the US are firm believers in freedom and respect for basic human rights, so I wanted to reach out and ask if you guys are even aware of how you are being officially representedand what is being done in your name?

Namely, as part of the EU green plan, , or whatever they call it, Germany and other EU countries, are looking to secure lithium mining (for batteries in EVs and what not) somewhere in their vicinity (as in no dependence on China et al), and somewhere where the laws will allow it, even though all official scientific reports have shown it to be extremely dangerous and detrimental to the environment (forever). Even though Germany is richer in lithium than Serbia, they can't mine it in their own country because, as I said, it's ecocidal and their laws prohibit such "profitable" endeavors.

Now, laws prohibit it in Serbia as well, but since we are a failed state basically, the laws are only fully respected when the "ruling party members and their families" need them to be respected, and are completely disregarded in the opposite cases. The common people ofc have to obey the law, but are not protected by it when they need it (e.g. the president's best man hits you by a car while on cocaine, and he doesn't go to jail or prison, but is fined ~$100). I know it sounds crazy and depressive, but that's how things are.

Now, the biggest problem, a rather existential one, springs from the fact that we have lots of lithium in the western Serbia, but not in the form that is easy to extract. It requires applying very aggressive techniques, which then leave the land uninhabitable. That's why this kind of mining is usually done in deserted areas. However, western Serbia is very populated, and even if it weren't, the effects of mining would be detrimental for the whole region. It's not impossible to do it safely, but honestly, I wouldn't trust our government with anything, let alone something complex and so dangerous that can endanger half of Europe.

That's why the people of Serbia have had massive politically non-affiliated protests in the last months, as the president has signed a deal with Mr Olaf Scholz (the German chancellor), in which he basically committed to allow mining to happen, despite all the warnings from the scientific community.

We understand that we need the green transition to happen or we're all gone, but mining lithium in inhabited areas is just not the answer, or at least not the first option. Especially when they plan to do this in a place that just has no proper institutions that can handle such required supervision, etc. This is rather a case of neo-colonialism, which is orchestrated by the EU officials and the corrupt government of Serbia.

Finally, I am getting to my point (thanks for your patience). Today, the US ambassador in Serbia, Mr Christopher Hill, stated that those who protest (peacefully) against lithium mining are working against the Serbia's road to the west (as in we're walking away from alliance with the north-western countries, aka the NATO).

Are you guys aware of how you are being represented? Do you belive that a nation should be strong armed like this into accepting its final blow? Do you think people should be scared into Russia and China's arms like this? Is that our only way out?
