Sweltering weather expected to continue in parts of Japan until mid-September Scorching heat continues to grip some parts of Japan in September, with temperatures topping 35 degrees Celsius at about one-sixth of the country’s observation points nationwide on Wednesday.

The Japan Meteorological Agency says daytime highs reached 37.8 degrees in the city of Hita, Oita Prefecture, 37.2 in the town of Hatoyama, Saitama Prefecture, and 37 in the cities of Kurume and Masuda in Fukuoka and Shimane prefectures.

Even in northern Japan, the mercury climbed to 36.4 degrees in the city of Kamaishi, Iwate Prefecture. That’s the highest for the city this year.

Temperatures of 35 degrees or higher were recorded at 152 of 914 observation points across the country.

Another scorching day is forecast for Thursday. Daytime highs are expected to hit 35 degrees in central Tokyo and the city of Osaka and become even higher in some other parts of western and eastern Japan.

The Meteorological Agency expects a spell of extremely hot days through early next week. In eastern Japan, temperatures may get to 35 degrees or higher through Monday, and in western Japan, by around Tuesday.
