  1. On 10 September, the Aichi Prefectural Police arrested an 18-year-old male high school student from Ichinomiya City, Aichi Prefecture, on suspicion of possessing explosives used in terrorism, including TATP (acetone peroxide), in his home, and seized test tubes, beakers and several chemicals and powders. He is suspected of manufacturing explosives and his motive is being investigated.

The suspect was suspected of possessing approximately 31g of powder containing TATP and 5g of powder containing the explosive HMTD at his home at around 10am on 10 September.

Prefectural police have implemented counter-terrorism measures, requesting vendors to provide information on suspicious purchasers of commercial products that could be raw materials for explosives. They were investigating after receiving information that an order for potassium nitrate, which could be used as a raw material, had been placed on the internet under the name of a high school student.

TATP is a high-performance explosive produced by reacting hydrogen peroxide water with chemicals such as acetone and hydrochloric acid. It explodes with a slight shock. It is often used in terrorist incidents overseas and is also known as the ‘mother of all devils’ due to its explosive power; HMTD has a high lethal capability and was used in the 2005 London attacks.
