Good? I’m glad the minister clarified this but I’d say this is kinda the bare minimum.

Why has the prison population increased by 50% since the mid nineties?

Criminal justice is like some black box of naughty or nice.

The singling out of groups in this way is utterly divisive. Im not defending domestic abuse. Its just that when it comes down to minsters playing pin the tail on the donkey of who is getting the thumbs up or thumbs down. its all getting a too bit Judge Dred.

  3. Article says

*The government said serious violent criminals, terrorists and domestic abuse perpetrators will not be released as part of the scheme.*

I don’t think this goes far enough. Nobody sentenced for violent assault should be released early.

It seems the worry about the domestic abuse offenders is coming from the cases where domestic abuse is just one of the crimes they’re in prison for. Looks like they’re making sure they won’t be released early for any other charges.

  4. Pro tip. If you abuse your partner, also commit petty theft. Then you can access early release based on the petty theft.

    I hate this world…

  5. The country is broke and its been being run on a corner cutting and facade building to pretend it’s still something like it was in 2007. Every service is falling apart. Prisons are no different.

We have been running on the assumption there is a bit of a 3 years of economic trouble before we return to growth since 2008.

    Enjoy what’s coming.

  6. Can’t we use a boat just off the coast? Apparently this was fine as accommodation?

Wouldn’t be *that* difficult to upgrade the rooms even if for the lesser risk criminals, extra reinforcement on walls and doors. A load of water surrounding it with heat seeker cameras in case anyone did make it

Maybe I’ve been watching too many dystopia programmes

  7. What’s interesting is foreign nationals make up 12% (10,422 people) of the total prison population. I don’t understand why we can’t just start deporting some of these.

Deport foreign criminals to their respective countries – many will take them for cash incentives. It actually adds as a deterrent too, they won’t enjoy those prisons unless they are Norwegian.
