I saw two people with a Union Jack get arrested almost immediately at a pro Hamas protest this week, so he isn’t lying about that.

I mean, good. They were fast enough to arrest people at “far right” protests, many on largely dubious charges and people who did not participate in rioting. We never saw a parallel process in arresting people at Gaza protests, which often turned violent. Or at the BLM march, where thousands of people broke lockdown regulations and also rioted. The shoe should fit both feet.

This is just trying to justify cracking down on protests in general and dress it up as defending the public.
Has a list of costs for policing predominantly peaceful protests.
Then cites a poll listing reasons why different people would avoid an area with an active protest.
“As this timely and detailed Policy Exchange report shows, the government must rebalance the legal regime in favour of ordinary members of the public going about their daily lives.”
“On occasion we did not move quickly to make arrests … We are now much more focused on identifying reasonable grounds for arrest, acting where needed, and then investigating, so in these circumstances it’s very likely arrests would be made more quickly now.”

This is a good move, whether it bares out statistically across the board or not, the “two tier policing” claims have clearly cut though to a large amount of people. The hands off approach to the anti-Israel protests didn’t help this. People seeing those chanting for genocide, waving offensive (or illegal placards) or making speeches that could incite violence being dragged off on the day will help with this.

We had a police officer come to our door and ask if we were having any problems with the protesters who gather once a week near our place. I siad they were fine and both sides have a right to protest. I siad I have much bigger problem with the fact you didn’t care or investigate when my 70 year old neighbour was mugged. He didn’t have much of an answer.

The only comfort I get from this is that those sneering and calling for anyone on the right to be arrested and sent to jail will be on the receiving end of it soon enough.
There will be a right wing government in this country, it’s not a matter of ‘if’, it’s ‘when’.
Personally, I would oppose any restrictions on protest, freedom of speech and the right to express opinion no matter where on the political spectrum they come from but the left is the dominant driver of oppression right now and that isn’t in their interest. When there is a right wing government all of these practices that they’ve supported will be used against them and I am betting they won’t like it.
