Govt. to install 'perovskite' solar cells in Fukushima Japan’s government is beefing up research and development into next-generation perovskite solar cells. It plans trial use of the cells in solar panels to be installed in Fukushima Prefecture by next March.

Perovskite cells are lighter and more flexible than silicon-based types, making them suitable for use on building walls. The technology is also attracting attention in Japan because the cells are made from iodine compounds, which are domestically available.

Sources say perovskite solar panels will be set up at three locations in Fukushima, including the national sports training center. They may also be used along highways.

Fukushima has been a focus of renewable energy projects in Japan. They are part of reconstruction efforts in the area after the 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

The government will announce the plan after a meeting with local officials on Tuesday.
