Babies grapple with cardboard sumo wrestler in Japan's Yamagata City Babies in the city of Yamagata, northeastern Japan have taken on a sumo wrestler made of cardboard in an event that brought joy to both young and old alike.

A local childcare support facility began the unique sumo challenge last year. A total of 38 babies aged from five months to three years took part on Sunday.

The cardboard wrestler stands about 60 centimeters tall. Contestants are declared winners by either pushing down the wrestler or staying in the ring without crying.

Some babies burst into tears as soon as the bout began, while others did their best to get away from the wrestler.

Spectators laughed out loud when babies tackled the wrester to the ground or stood tall without wailing.

A mother of a 10-month-old boy said she enjoyed the lively atmosphere of the event. She expressed hope that her baby will grow up honest and robust.

Another mother of a 10-month-old girl and a 3-year-old boy said she was delighted to see her baby pushing hard while crying. She added that she hopes her children will grow up to become adults who can tackle various challenges.
