Didn’t the contractors do super low bids and once excepted jack up prices once enough work had been done not to cancel it? added tunnels in Tory constituencies added billions too and meant the journey from old oak had a tiny amount of time with country wide views. All Dodgy as hell.

Labour have a chance to save HS2 by investing a small amount of money to build 2a to Crewe and ensure Euston is complete. It is hard to believe anyone thinks delivering a worse service than the current line after spending £60 billion is anything other than election losing.

Easy: GREEED! And people throwing hissy fits that it would go through their lands. And the constantly shafting of the north after millions to billions have been blown.

I don’t even need to read it to say that it’s almost definately weak programme management, weak and over compensated contractors and advisors.

Labour should come in and finish it, they would look so heroic and everyone would forget the cost after a while.
“Everything the Tories touch turns to failure and disaster, the future of Britain is built by hard graft, it’s built by Labour”
Would be such obviously good messaging at the next election.

Controversial and I am prepared for the downvotes I wouldn’t mind If labour brought back the plan in its entirety even if it costs a fortune the north desperately needs some investment. We have one of the worst regional inequalities in europe we can’t just expect to fix it if we cancel every plan because it’s too expensive.

Birmingham station for hs2 is going to like 8 platforms but only 4 will be used or something similar. It’s cheaper to finish them off and not use them than to stop and knock them down. Madness

What happens if you set up a company. The. You ask political friends to vote you into a project you have no idea how to run. You the. Say we’re behind schedule every few years while also saying thing have gone over budget. From time to time you hire a digger to move a bit of money while putting everything else on expenses. Spend like crazy until the government pulls the plug and your 67 billion better off

NIMBYs and corruption – same as always.
How does it even take like 12 years with almost nothing done though? China built a space station in less time!

The original plan had a cycle path running down its whole length and connecting communities.
The government didn’t even bother to tell the construction companies that part of the plan 🙄

It needs to be built from Euston to Crewe at a bare minimum

All those nimby lot now pointing saying it’s cost too much and not providing what was promised. Shameful. Of course it won’t work if every Tom Dick and Harry who have no education in civil planning has a say

Couldn’t they just fit the existing trains with really solid WiFi?

Governments are inefficient at spending your money. Some people still fail to acknowledge this demonstrable fact for ideological reasons.
