This is potentially HUGE news, for one good reason, and one very very bad one –
1. It suggests a more solid link between a definitive cause of autism, and therefore a possible cure.
2. It will give fuel to the conspiracy nuts who are unable to understand that Andrew Wakefield not only fabricated evidence about a link between vaccines and autism, but did so for money.

Women have been told for years to use BC if using Valproate, due to birth defects issues.
The reason why it’s the only Bipolar med that I haven’t tried.
Not surprising it would also affect sperm but bringing Autism into it, is a bit of a grab.

>Babies exposed to sodium valproate in the womb have a 40% risk of of autism and other neurodevelopmental problems and a 10% risk of physical abnormalities.
This seems unlikely, that would be a crazy high rate compared to the general population

The most important factor here is that sodium valproate is used to regulate bioelectrical activity. Bioelectricity plays a key part in the development of embryos it’s to some extent more important than DNA since it what allows cells to communicate and collectively decide what to do where.
Of this correlation is true it would quite possibly allow us to unlock exactly what in the bioelectrical map during development causes autism which would quite possibly would allow us to correct it either during pregnancy or possibly even after it.
Bioelectricity is really the next big frontier in medical sciences and biology in general it’s seem to be the latch key and the missing component we were looking for in so many biological mechanisms and the key to doing many amazing things from eliminating or fixing birth defects to regrowing lost limbs and entire organs.

Wish someone had advised my da to use contraception. My experience of neurodiversity has been pretty negative all in, and while I am able to mostly function as an adult, it isn’t easy or enjoyable.

In 2018 I was notified by my GP and specialist that sodium valproate was being removed for all people who could conceive, due to the risk of foetal abnormalities. The pharmacist rang me and explained the risk and I was posted a copy as well, along with a final prescription with guidance to taper off the dose instead of seizure risk by stopping cold-turkey.

This is so interesting because in adults valporate can reopen the learning window for learning perfect pitch that usually can only be learned in childhood. There are some theories that people with autism have sensory issues because their brains haven’t trimmed back the required amount of connections so they are hyper wired. Feels like there might be a connection here between the drug’s affect on adults and this possible link to autism.

“That study did not prove sodium valproate was the cause, the MHRA said, or compare risks for children whose fathers were not on medication.”
“Babies exposed to sodium valproate in the womb have a 40% risk of of autism and other neurodevelopmental problems and a 10% risk of physical abnormalities.“
I’m sorry, is this not *really* bad reporting? How can both of those statements be correct?
Textbook correlation doesn’t imply causation.
IMO I’d wager that the cause is more likely to be hereditary neurodivergence misdiagnosed as other issues. Autism/ADHD are genetic!
This article will just fuel more “autism bad” and “vaccines cause autism” panic. Feels like really dangerous reporting.
